History buffs who are looking for something different to do during their holidays to Seychelles should take the time to check out the historical sites located across the nation’s islands. Seychelles is more than just white sand beaches and fantastic natural sites both on and off land. It has a rich history that spans centuries, ever since the English, French and other nations colonized it. If you are looking for some sites to see during your holidays to Seychelles, here are the ones you shouldn’t miss. All of them are located on the island of Mahe.

The Clock Tower in Victoria

Known as Lorloz, this famous clock tower is one of the most photographed historical landmarks in Seychelles. It is in the centre of Victoria and it is called ‘Little Ben’ because it is an exact replica of ‘Big Ben’ in London. The clock was erected in Victoria in 1903 and it has recently been restored, repairing the chiming mechanism that never worked from the day it arrived in the city.

The Old Courthouse in Victoria

Architecture fans will enjoy taking in the architecture of the Old Courthouse. It was built in Creole style and it is located near the Natural History Museum and the Clock Tower. There are more colonial buildings along the road the courthouse is located on, making it a must see for anyone who likes architecture while on holiday to Seychelles.

Bicentennial Monument in Victoria

Called ‘Twa Zwazo’ by the natives of Seychelles, the Bicentennial Monument is one of the key landmarks in the city. Translated as ‘Three Birds’, the monument is three pairs of curved white wings that represent the European, Asian and African heritage of Seychelles. It was erected in 1978 and is also a symbol of the indigenous birds of the islands.

Arul Mihu Navasakthi Vinayagar in Victoria

This Hindu temple is located in the city with a beautiful backdrop of rolling green hills. It was built in 1992 and it is one of the newer historical sites in the city. It is the only Hindu temple located on Seychelles and it is open to the public. It was named for the Hindu god of safety and prosperity and the ornate tower is one of the most colourful in the nation.

St. Paul’s Cathedral in Victoria

Replacing the historic church that was destroyed by a cyclone during the middle of the 19th century, this cathedral was rebuilt and remodelled in 2001. Consecration of the church occurred in 2004 and even though it is a simple church, it is beautiful and should be visited at least once.

Mission Lodge in Mount Fleuri

Located in the town of Mount Fleuri, this site was originally the site of Venn’s Town. It was built to be a school designed to educate the first black slaves that gained their freedom. The ruins of the first school are located on the site and visitors to the site will love the views of the mountains and the sea that can be found from the site’s vantage point.
